OAS & Los Kitos Hit the Airwaves

The "Los Kitos" radio show is now being broadcast throughout the countries of Latin America thanks to the Organization of American States (OAS). As part of its weekend magazine show, the OAS is including a six-minute "Los Kitos" segment. The "Los Kitos" radio show features the characters from the comic strip "Los Kitos," which appears weekly in 285 newspapers worldwide. The segment centers around the adventures of Pikito, Mima, and Picarito as they learn to balance cultural traditions with the issues that children's face in the world today. The stories utilize simple writing and humor to deliver a positive, values-based message. One-hundred and fifty radio stations are carrying the broadcast.

Mario Martinez y Palacios, the Senior Public Information Officer for the OAS, is the broadcaster for the show. He is a one-man tour de force, who has been involved in broadcasting and journalism for the past 25 years. Born in Ecuador and educated in the United States, Palacios' distinguished career has included positions as a newscaster/anchor, reporter, interviewer and executive with leading Spanish-language radio and television organizations. Palacios said that the OAS support for the program is a result of the organization's policy to help working women in their business endeavors, as well as to meet the needs of children in Latin American countries, who do not have much entertainment geared specifically to them.

In the United States, a thirty-minute "Los Kitos" radio show can be heard from California to Florida. "Los Kitos" is the brainchild of creator Martha Montoya. Montoya emigrated from Colombia with a dream of becoming a cartoonist-one who had something positive and constructive to say to the Latin/Hispanic community worldwide. Pograma para Niños en Busca de Talentos en Radio

LOS ANGELES (22 de mayo del 2000) El programa de radio para niños de la 1020 KTNQ estará seleccionando talentos nuevos para su programa de radio que se emite los sábados por la mañana bajo la producción de "Los Kitos". La selección se llevará a cabo este próximo sábado 27 de mayo, a las 10:00 am, en el Mercadito, situado en East L.A en calle 1st Street esquina Indiana, donde se audicionará a niños y niñas de 8 a 15 años, que con gran desenvuelto, quieran ser partícipes de la gran experiencia de estar en radio.

El jurado estará compuesto de grandes personalidades tales como Alex Jiménez del Programa Chiquitrán; Luis Medina, promotor y presidente de Uno Productions; Camila Bastidas, reconocida actriz y presentadora del programa "La Piñata Loca" de la cadena Univisión y Santiago Nieto, Director de Programación de la 1020 AM de Los Angeles.

Con la producción y coordinación de Martha Montoya, Presidenta y
Creadora de Los Kitos, y los demás miembros del jurado, se elegirá a 3 parejas de niños para que estén frente al micrófono en el programa que saldrá al aire el Domingo 11 de junio a las 9:00 am.

Los Kitos Entertainment, LLC fue creado hace 5 años por Martha Montoya, quien a principios de este año llevó a Los Kitos a la radio,
descubriendo una nueva forma de comunicar el mensaje educativo que llevan estas caricaturas animadas a todo el país.

Los Kitos™ Get Animated

Los Kitos Entertainment has granted animation rights to The Krislin Company to produce an animated children's television series. Krislin president Walt Kubiak says, "We are very excited about our association with Los Kitos and look forward to introducing this fine product to the television market."

The Krislin Company, which was formed by Walt Kubiak in 1992, is best known for its high-quality animation products and its ability to finish projects on time and within budgetary requirements. It is currently involved in producing traditionally-animated television programming and high-quality television specials, series, and direct-to-video features. Diversity Event Presentation

Last December, Martha Montoya gave a presentation at the Diversity Best Practices Session III, hosted by the Business Women's Network (www.BWNi.com) Diversity Council at Allstate Insurance Co. headquarters in Illinois. More than 20 companies were represented at this event, including Shell, Allstate, and Deolitte and Touche.
Montoya's topic was "A Supplier's Point of View." She compared her experiences dealing with U.S. corporate diversity divisions and foreign companies, addressing corporate financial practices and their impact on small suppliers and offering suggestions for checking suppliers' backgrounds and for reaching out to them. She encouraged corporate America to "allow small businesses to grow with the economy" as they did.

Los Kitos Radio Show Launched

"Los Kitos" are now heard on radio. Although the show is primarily aimed at Hispanic families with children ages 4 through 9, the adventures of "Los Kitos" are written to appeal to the American mainstream.

Street Safety Walk

On Friday, October 6, school children, their parents, and the Santa Ana Pedestrian Safety Project, in partnership with the city, SAUSD, Southern California Auto Club, and the Partnership for a Walkable America, will celebrate "Walk a Child to School Day." Last year over 5,000 participated.
For this year's event, Los Kitos Entertainment plans to produce t-shirts, reflective safety stickers, and posters featuring Los Kitos characters, to help educate the public and to promote safety. Los Kitos Outreach Program for the Arts


Los Kitos Entertainment has formed an outreach program to introduce Hispanic children to the arts and to encourage them to participate in them. From time to time we will highlight various organizations and institutions that offer programs that fit with ours.
One such institution is the Los Angeles Music and Art School (LAMAS), a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1945 for the purpose of providing exposure and instruction in the arts primarily to low-income children residing in east Los Angeles. Classes are structured for students of all ages and levels of study, offering private and group instruction in instrumental and vocal music, dance, art, drama, and graphic design.

Los Kitos Animation Premiered

On December 13, 1999, Martha Montoya was a guest on Despierta América, Univision's (www.univision.net) number one morning television show. Rafael José interviewed her, "Los Kitos" performed, and the "Los Kitos" animation was premiered.

Despierta América is to Hispanics in the U.S. what Good Morning, America is to mainstream U.S. viewers and is seen throughout the U.S. and Latin America. "We received email from [viewers in] different countries, asking when and where the show was going to be aired," says Montoya. "It is rewarding to see that the market is ready for a cartoon strip [that comes from a Hispanic] talent."

Los Programadores and Us

The radio industry publication Los Programadores and Los Kitos Entertainment have inked an agreement for Martha Montoya to provide biweekly articles for the magazine. They will focus on Hispanic children and what business is doing to keep up-to-date on that market's buying power and preferences.

"Drawing on the foundation of a dream"

Martha Montoya enchants with cartoons. In fact, she has dedicated her life to the adventures of five colorful little creatures who are called "Los Kitos," an abbreviation of "muñequitos." Her nationally syndicated comic strip shows how the happy creatures use their Latin values to face the challenges of life. The strip focuses on subjects such as immigration and assimilation and other stages of life experienced by the Hispanics who live in the United States. Montoya is very inspired by her own traditions and Latin values. She narrates her comic strip with sayings, expressions common in many Latin American cultures. "I Use many of our subjects - ingredients that are part of our culture," says Montoya, 38. The power of these comic strips is influencing the tendency of public opinion in the United States to begin to know the diversities of the Hispanic culture. The great North American companies are the ones who have grown fond of Los Kitos. The comic strip and its adventures, are a pleasant package to send to the ever-growing pockets of an increasing Latin population.

 

Their colorful faces appear in everything, from a coloring book for the Bank of America, phone cards for Pacific Telesis, a line of clothes for Sears, and a campaign of advertising warnings for the U.S. Postal Service. Montoya thinks that Los Kitos has arrived at the opportune moment. "Los Kitos" is cute, not because the themes are so wise, but because the moment in which they happen is propitious," says the cartoonist, born in Colombia, who hopes that Los Kitos becomes a recognized name world-wide as it is, for example, for the comic strip "Peanuts." " We, the Hispanics, have always had these values. And now everyone is remembering that these values are important. With Los Kitos, the North American companies gain the confidence of the community. They are likeable creatures - good representatives - because they are never stuck in problems," insists Montoya.

 

Like representatives, Picarito, Mima, Pigoleto, Pikito and Kolito can easily find a young Hispanic population through their bilingual messages. For example, they can introduce the children to the use of the banking system. Nevertheless, I asked Montoya if it was so easy to obtain the patronage of the corporations and she laughs, saying that it is a constant challenge.

 

"Some people still think that the Hispanics only buy frijoles and rice," she says. "Society was dominated by white men with specific parameters, and now that is changing. The evolution of the change emanates from the purchasing power of the Hispanics," says Montoya. And while Montoya makes great advances, mainly in the area of marketing, she also, without wanting it, has become an agent of change for the women and people of color in the comic strip industry. Montoya is one of only three women who create comic strips that are nationally syndicated, and the only Hispanic. Los Kitos now appears in weekly form in 231 publications around the world. Montoya has found the drawing success based upon her personal experiences: being a Hispanic owner of a business; from immigrating; and from her mother. Nevertheless, Montoya tells us a secret: "I do not know how to draw. My limitations have been my better qualities, and have remained central to me."

 

The Kitos began like a pastime, a dream and a secret pleasure for Montoya. She has taken Los Kitos with her throughout her life because they helped her understand a growing and changing world. "The comic strips began to enter my mind when I was 6 years old. I spent a long time in the hospital due to problems with my kidneys," she tells us. Montoya also drew solutions to the conflicts around the world after listening to the news on the radio. "It was only a pastime, but I always opened the newspaper and read the comic strips and I dreamed about having a comic strip next to Snoopy," she says. When she was an adolescent living in Colombia, Montoya read the biography of Walt Disney and she realized that people could make money creating cartoons.

"Then I had two goals: the first was to finish school and start a career. The second was that some day I would go to the United States and I would do it! I began to work on my two goals simultaneously."

Being the daughter of two professors, Montoya had always valued education and gaining life experiences. In the university, she graduated with degrees in biology and chemistry. When she arrived in the United States, she maintained her approach to making money to be able to have a foundation for her dream to draw comic strips. Her work as a librarian, professor, a buyer for international agriculture, were like master keys. "A university for cartoonists does not exist," she says. "There was no place that taught the business of comic strips to me." She understood that she would have to learn the business by herself, reading books and attending cartoonist conventions.

For Montoya, the strong work and the perserverence have paid off. She has hopes that the world receives Los Kitos as representatives of a more considerate society, where the experiences of all - recent immigrants or not - are taken into account.

Los Kitos supports loyalty, friendship and the family - those values were forgotten, but now we are returning to them because the world is a much smaller place.

Be on the lookout this September when the American Broadcasting Company will be airing "The Story of a Successful Cartoonist." The television special will focus on creator Martha Montoya and how the bilingual cartoon strip Los Kitos is trying to build a bridge between the Hispanic Community and mainstream America. Dessert Anyone?


Fans of Lulu's Dessert factory gelatin cups are in for an extra treat-the popular Los Kitos comic strip now will be featured on each dessert cup thanks to an agreement with Maria De Lourdes Sobrino, CEO of Lulu's Dessert Factory, and Los Kitos creator Martha Montoya. Ms. Montoya said she is delighted to have another unique and positive way to present her characters to the public and sees the new partnership as enhancing the relationship between Spanish and English-speaking audiences through yet another avenue. Lulu's Dessert Factory distributes nationwide, ready-to-eat gelatin products with a wide customer base including Ralph's Supermarket, Von's Supermarket, Food 4 Less, Wal-Mart and Stater Bros.

 

Los Kitos and Su Familia...


The Spanish-language, family health magazine "Su Familia" has begun publishing a Los Kitos activity page in each issue, complete with a maze and word puzzle to delight children. "Su Familia," which is published out of Torrance, California, is a quarterly magazine distributed free to health professionals. It currently has a circulation of 220,000.

 

La Opinion Honors Martha


The nation's oldest and largest Spanish-language newspaper, La Opinion, held a gala ceremony at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this June to celebrate top business leaders of the Latino community. Martha Montoya, president of Los Kitos Entertainment received a frame with her article featured in 1998 in recognition of her valuable contributions to the community.

 

Trade Convention Stars Los Kitos


Los Kitos' "Mango Tangle" made its appearance at the 1999 Video Software Dealer's Association (VSDA) Conven-tion at the Los Angeles Convention Center this July. In what for more than 20 years has come to be the industry's largest show of video products, "Mango Tangle" was featured as a fantasy for children who believe in what may fall from the sky. Through this video, children gently learn the importance of being practical.

 

Los Kitos' Fashion Statement


Three major New York manufacturers will be busy at work this fall designing Los Kitos apparel and accessories for kids of all ages. David Maleh of Children's Apparel Network said that his company will be fashioning a collection for Summer 2000 consisting of T-shirts, tank tops and short sets featuring the Los Kitos characters. Los Kitos children's apparel should appear in local stores by late spring.
Ike Tawil of IMT Acces-sories said that his company's plan is to create a full basics and accessories package that will meet the Back to School needs of kids for Fall 2000. Products will include underwear, socks, cold weather accessories, hair accessories, underwear, socks, and even a line of fun makeup. Los Kitos accessories should be hitting the stores sometime in late July.

The Art of Cartooning


From September 11 to October 9, the art of Martha Montoya will be featured along with fellow cartoonists at Self Help Graphics' Galeria Otra Vez in Los Angeles. Self Help Graphics & Art is a community based visual arts center located in the heart of East Los Angeles. Since its inception 25 years ago,
"Los Cartoonists," had its premiere opening on Saturday, September 11. Many of the cartoonists featured were first time exhibitors-self-published Latino cartoonists whose work is being seen for the first time in a gallery. "The response," said Christina Ochoa of Self Help Graphics, "was overwhelming positive, and it looks as if the exhibit will be one of our most successful to date."
The Self-Help Gallery will be featuring a Cartoon Workshop on October 2 that is sure to attract young people as well as artists of all ages. Martha Montoya, creator of Los Kitos, will be explaining how a cartoon strip is put together from the beginning concept to the final printed product. Those attending will have an opportunity to try out their cartooning skills as they engage in the artistic process.

Festival Fun!


Los Kitos Entertainment assisted in sponsoring the third annual Latino Book and Family Festival, the largest Latino trade show in the United States. The Festival was held August 28­29 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, with attendance of 48,500. A festival highlight was the presentation of five one thousand dollar scholarships by Edward James Olmos.

NEWPORT BEACH CA -- Another kudos for Martha Montoya, creator of Los Kitos bilingual comic strip. On April 19, 1999 Martha received the Orange County Business Journal's 5th Annual Women in Business Award. Over 100 women in business were nominated this year. This annual event recognizes their outstanding accomplishments, leadership, ingenuity and hard work. Candidates were selected from education, business, journalism, health and the arts. Ms. Montoya is the first Latina to be nominated and the first to receive this prestigious award.

Martha Montoya, creator of Los Kitos, has been nominated for the latin business Association Business of the Year Award. The 23rd Annual Awards Gala salutes Latino-owned businesses in Southern California. The annual event recognizes exceptional achievements of Latino as well as outstanding contributioins of the Latino/Latina entrepreneurs who foster the development of Latino businesses.

 

NEW YORK, NY: Fundamental Capital of New York signed Los Kitos licensee to manufacture shoes, and a slipper line to be distributed in the United States, Mexico and Latin America. With offices in New York, Florida and Southern California, the first orders are for winter 1999 at 500 WalMart stores.

 

ANAHEIM, CA: Martha Montoya will be the keynote speaker at CABE (California Association of Bilingual Education) in Anaheim, CA on Wednesday, May 26, 1999.

 

COLOMBIA, SA: Los Kitos and Martha Montoya, as well as other distinguished Colombian honorees were honored on May 27, 1999 by the Colombian-American Chamber of Commerce annual Cena de Gala de los Colombianos Notables of the United States. The Gala was held at the Gran Salon del Club el Nogal, Santafe de Bogota, Colombia. The event was a benefit of the damnificados of Armenia and the albergue infantil de Bogota.

 NEWPORT BEACH, CA -- Martha Montoya, creator of the Los Kitos comic strip, received the Outstanding Latina of the Year Award by Radio Stations KLVE, and KSCA. The awards are presented as part of the "Feria de La Mujer" (Women's Fair).  

 

The annual event recognizes Hispanic women who project positive role model images to the over 6.5 million Latinos in the greater Los Angeles area. Selected candidates are chosen for their significant contributions in the fields of education, business, entertainment, politics, journalism, sports and the arts.

The Los Kitos comic strip is now featured in the Orange County Register's Sunday Edition. The Register is a subsidiary of the highly acclaimed Freedom Communications Group.

Jersey Records is producing a series of storytelling cassettes for distribution through MCA/Universal.

The Orange Coundy Coalition for Conflict Resolution Education is utilizing the characters as spokespersons for their Mediation Center.

COSTA MESA, CA : The Orange County Coalition for Conflict Resolution Education announced its plan to use the Los Kitos characters in this year's Student Mediation Conference. The project is designed to support students in exploring new dimensioins of conflict management.

"I am very excited about using the Los Kitos design to pull together our conflict resolution work in Orange County," says Vicki Walker, chariperson for OCCCRE. "The characters will allow students to receive the main message more effectively.

OCCCRE, who works in conjunction with the Orange County School District, is a coalition of community agencies and schools which teach students and adults the cooperative problem solving skills necessary to mediate conflicts on the campus and throughout the community.

Los Kitos will be the spokescharacters at the Student Mediation Conference entitled "Today's Peacemakers, Tomorrow's Leaders" on March 26, 1999, at the University of California, Irvine.

The Los Kitos comic strip is now featured in the Orange County Register's Sunday edition. The animated characters can be found conveying strong morals and values in the Kid's Space section.

In a business that has been created mostly by white males for largely white malle audiences, Martha Montoya offers a refreshing change. Rarely does one see a strip that is authored by someone who can receive recognition without being pressured to draw like a man, or imitate her white counterparts. Los Kitos is now the first Hispanic cartoon to be published in a major non-Hispanic newspaper.

LOS KITOS & National Exchange Club  

A  positive partnership for happier families

 

 

Los Kitos has created a Child Abuse Prevention bilingual campaign for the National Exchange Club Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

The "I Got You" campaign is going to be printed in a mini poster that will be distributed at the National Exchange Club Convention from July 8-11 in Chicago, Illinois, at the National Child Abuse Prevention Symposium from September 23-26 in Toledo, Ohio, and all the events and concerts of Los Kitos. "This is an exciting campaign mainly because it is giving simple information to the parents on how to reward their child when he or she is "caught" doing the right thing.
This reward is always accomplished by giving a hug and a kiss to the child" says Martha Montoya the creator of Los Kitos, "we feel that a beautiful character with a simple positive message in a sweet environment should remind parents that small accomplishments by children are milestones for the future. This will encourage both, parents and children to try to keep doing positive things".

To date, more than 75,000 families and 100,000 children have been helped by the Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention network, created in 1979 to develop, implement and promote programs that break the cycle of abuse. "Exchange is a national service organization made up of more than 33,000 men and women dedicated to making America a better place to live" says Ms. Jamie Orians, Public Relations Manager. "Nearly all of the 1,000 Exchange Clubs participate in local child abuse prevention efforts and we hope that the Exchange Club communities will receive Los Kitos with open arms" concludes Ms. Orians
